Colonization of the Remnant system was a breakthrough in humanity's outward expansion. The system was composed of seven planets, three of which were determined to be excellent candidates for population centers. As the sleeper ship arrived in the system three hundred and fifty years after it left the shipyards orbiting Jupiter, the colonists awoke to discover that the Remnant system was more than it had originally appeared.

Vast alien ruins tens of thousands of years old were discovered on the surfaces and in the orbits of the third, fourth and seventh planets, and the third planet was home to a staggering variety of alien flora and fauna. Research on the found ruins began immediately, and led to the discovery of the principles of instantaneous teleportation. A gateway portal was constructed linking directly to Earth. This greatly sped up human colonization of other systems. Just a few decades later, there was a vast network of teleporter gates. The humans' hopes for contact with another intelligent race, however, were not fulfilled. Each new world was as difficult and as barren of intelligent life as the next.

Then, one of the border colonies on the far edge of the human colonies winked out. Then another. And another. Advance scouts were sent ahead and returned hastily-taken images of an enormous fleet, horribly alien, destroying an entire colony world.

Earth panicked, and called back forces from every corner of the empire to prepare a counter force. As preparations were underway, more colonies disappeared, and information about the seemingly unstoppable invasion trickled in: fleeing was the only route to survival. Any colonial force that held its ground was out-thought on every level, and despite the seemingly unimpressive alien firepower, colonial armies were ground into dust underneath the perfectly timed enemy strikes that tore apart strategies which had barely been formed. As their last hope for survival, Earth deployed its fleet. However, despite all efforts to keep battle information flowing out of the Remnant system, the Remnant teleporter gate went dark five hours later.

Now, you are on the wrong side of the gate. As one of the survivors, you must piece together what happened and unravel the mysteries of the alien invasion and the Remnant system itself.
